So this weekend was Valyermo. Valyermo is an Abbey in the high desert of Southern Califas. It is one of my favorite places in the world. On an average day you can go up and spend a day of solitude, meditation, and good conversation with men who have given their entire lives to God. It is an amazing place. Then comes the last weekend of September.
The smells are of beer, leathered skin, perfume covered smoking biker grandmas, cotton candy, and tour bus exhaust. The streets are filled with sweaty, smelly, tired people. The food is guaranteed to take 3 days off each soul who partakes of it. 25000 people invade the beautiful oasis every September. All looking for some cheap beer, hugs from a Father, and a good deal on puffy paint shirts. The Valyermo Arts Festival is one of my favorite times of the year.
I love to walk around with Heather because she is sort of a local celebrity. Rumor is she was conceived here. 😉 So was Sohaila. Just kidding. This place holds a close place in her heart and I have grown to love it as well. Heathers dad Bill is buried here in the cemetery where the monks and oblates are buried. The cemetery is one of the most peaceful places I know. If ever driving through the high desert of So Cal be sure to stop by. Have lunch with a monk. Abbot Francis runs the place and is one of the best conversationalists I know. He will enlighten your day.
Check out the PHOTO ALBUM of the weekend. How was your weekend Ragamuffins? Let me know.
